MARWEN ANNOUNCES THIRD ANNUAL ART FAIR WITH

PROCEEDS BENEFITING MARWEN AND ITS ARTISTS

***Exhibition and sale include artwork by Marwen

students, alumni, teaching artists, and staff***

(Chicago, IL – September 8, 2008) Marwen announces its third annual Art Fair, a celebratory evening of food and drink, music, and engagement with dozens of new and established contemporary artists who will be on hand to discuss their work.  Approximately 170 works created by Marwen students, alumni, staff, and teaching artists—reflecting a range of styles and media—will be on display and for sale.  Half the proceeds of the sale of each work benefit Marwen and half benefit the artist.  Art Fair will be held on Friday, November 7, 2008 from 6:30-10pm in Marwen’s River North gallery space at 833 North Orleans Street.  A suggested donation of $20 is requested at the door.

“The young people served by Marwen’s programs are at the vanguard of contemporary art and design,” said Executive Director Antonia Contro.  “They will be creating the visual texture of our world in the years to come, and Art Fair is an opportunity for the supporters of Marwen—from the curious who have never been here before to our old friends—to learn more about these diverse young artists and the role Marwen plays in their lives.”

Lowry Hill is the presenting sponsor of Art Fair.  Since 1986, Lowry Hill has managed the financial affairs of wealthy families and foundations.  Today the firm manages approximately $5 billion in assets for almost 300 families and foundations in 41 states from offices in Minneapolis, Chicago, Naples and Scottsdale.

The Host Committee for Art Fair includes co-chairs Margarita Botty Galindo and Doug Gourley, and members Heiji Choy Black, Alfredo Botty, Marcy Carlin, Beth Gallagher, Mary Clare Gourley, Alyssa Judlo, Nikita Kejriwal, A.J. Jindal and Sejal Parikh, Isa Pressman, and Elizabeth Spenko.

Marwen educates and inspires under-served youth through the visual arts. What began modestly in 1987 as a handful of teens in a single studio has grown into a nationally recognized visual art education organization providing rigorous studio-art programs completely free-of-charge to more than 2,000 Chicago students in grades 6-12 every year. Marwen offers more than 150 programs annually in visual arts, college readiness, and career exploration. Our instructors are top talents, including an Academy Award-nominated animator, principals of high-profile design and architecture firms, a nationally-published graphic-novelist, and artists whose work has been featured in galleries large and small across the country. In 2003, Marwen received a “Coming Up Taller” award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. In 2006, Marwen was selected as one of 10 arts organizations nationwide to be profiled in Harvard University’s forthcoming study “The Qualities of Quality: Excellence in Arts Education and How to Achieve It.”

The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation is a Chicago headquartered organization seeking more attention to pulmonary fibrosis an indiscriminate lung disease that can strike any age group, male or female and has claimed the lives of Evel Knievel, Marlon Brando, Robert Goulet, to name a few.

Krsyten Knievel will be running in the Chicago Marathon in memory and honor of her grandfather, Evel Knievel.   Krysten became closer to her grandfather before he passed away from pulmonary fibrosis in November 2007 and she wants to make a difference by raising awareness of this little known disease that ended his life.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a disease that takes as many lives each year as breast cancer.  Yet, no one knows about it.  There are 5 million people affected by this disease worldwide. Yet, no one has heard of it.  In the United States there are over 200,000 patients with Pulmonary Fibrosis. We need a voice.  We need to be heard.

The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation is sponsoring a pilot charity bike ride revealing  little known highlights of Chicago’s South side – The Treasures of the South Side will take place on Saturday, October 18 starting at 10 am.

Even long time Chicagoans may find the ride to be a unique learning experience.  The rider will experience unknown treasures such as the Japanese Gardens and the beauty of urban waterfalls, lawn bowling courts, etc.

Come out and join us for a one of a kind bike riding experience.   Space is limited for this pilot bike ride.  Registration is $40.00 and pledges for riders are greatly appreciated. If you are interested in participating, routes and registration information can be found at: http://www.active.com/donate/tosspf.
